Lighting is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a aquarium. The proper lighting intensity is required for your plants, fish, corals or invertebrates to survive. Plants, corals and many invertebrates require light for photosynthesis to generate energy. If they could not receive enough light for photosynthesis, they will not survive.
Metal Halide lamps are basically lightings for your fish tank. They are highly prized for their unique ability to create a super light effect in the aquarium. They are primarily used in Saltwater Reef Tank setups where light hungry corals, anemones, and clams are kept. Metal Halide bulbs are high-powered bulbs that require special ballasts . They come in wattages starting from 70W and range all the way up to 1,000W in a single bulb. Each wattage requires a compatible ballast to power that bulb. The big thing about Halides is that unlike fluorescent lamps, which spread light out over the entire length of the bulb, they are a pinpoint source of light. Metal Halides produce up to 125 lumens per watt compared to 39 lumens per watt with fluorescent lights and 18 lumens per watt for standard incandescent bulbs. Metal Halide light systems are the number one choice for aquatics
Metal Halide bulbs produce an abundance of light in the blue spectrum. This color of light promotes plant growth and is excellent for green leafy growth and keeping plants compact. It is the best type of light to be used as a primary light source (if no or little natural sunlight is available). Plants, SPS corals, clams, and anemones would best survive in a system with metal bulb.
